Boss Cube Street II

This new portable amplifier evolved from the Roland Cube Street and is the first to bear the BOSS name. It's easy to carry, weighing only 4.4kg, but feels sturdy enough to withstand a few knocks thanks to its molded housing. It's designed for street performers, but it also has some high-tech features that elevate it to more than just an amp you can take anywhere.

The Cube Street II comes with a mains adapter, but can also be powered by 8 AA batteries. Boss quotes a battery life of up to eight hours using the full 10W of power, or slightly longer if you flip the Eco Mode switch, which cuts the output down to 5W. In use it's surprisingly loud at full power, the two 6.5-inch speakers produce a clear and direct mid and top end, as well as decent bass, especially if you tweak the EQ settings to suit your performance. The upward-firing design helps direct the sound towards your audience rather than along the ground, and also gives it double duty as a wedge monitor as part of a larger PA setup.

With your mic and guitar connected, you can use the built-in effects to add some sparkle to your performance without the need for external effects pedals. The mic/instrument channel can be matched to the source and has a three-band EQ and reverb control. If you're using a microphone, you can use the harmony knob to add digital harmonies to your vocals, with different settings on the knob for different pitch harmonies - unison, high, and higher. A footswitch input lets you toggle harmony or reverb on or off, making them practical performance tools, not just window dressing.
