The James Neligan Cigar Box Guitar has 4 strings, which gives you some options for tuning it. You can tune it in 'open G' or 'open D', or in 'standard guitar tuning'. For this last tuning, you tune the strings like the thinnest 4 strings of a guitar: E-B-G-D. Another option is the 'banjo tuning'. You can tune a 5-string banjo D-B-G-D-G. You can tune your cigar box guitar like the 4 'long' strings of the banjo: B-G-D-G, with the B string being the thinnest.
